When I was in Dallas, I made it a mission to get comics since there are no dedicated comic stores in my area (If you think the Minnesota campuses of Faker and Nothing Better are desolate, you need to make the trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michgan). Among the various media I gorged on while on vacation was a uniqe comic called Nightly News.
I first expected Jonathan Hickman’s Nightly News to follow in the same vein as other reporter/journalist comics such as Transmetropolitan, Shooting War and DMZ. However, Nighly News seems very cynical about the journalistic tradition. It even makes me uncomfortable as a pseudo-gonzo reporter.
Nighly News is about a cell of people whose lives have been destroyed by reckless news stories out for revenge. I would describe the whole of the comic as more incisive than Transmetropolitan while being more coherent than The Invisibles.
As I’m in Communications and a member of a design-related enterprise, I was pleasantly surprised when first opened the TPB of Nightly news and saw the abstract vector-art design of the pages. If there is one thing I respect about Image comics, its the penchant for publishing comics with unique design (ie: Bendis’ classics). The infographics are strangely informative, and according to the blurbs before them, entirely voluntary.
