E3 2010 — Sony Press Conference impressions

Sony’s Playstation 3 caters the most, out of the other consoles, to the hardcore gamers, with a  focus on performance and gaming. However, Sony has fallen behind the other consoles in sales. Lets see what they have in store for us this year.

  • Killzone 3

It’s hard to see how this differentiates itself from other gritty sci-fi shooters. Given the notorious pre-rendered trailer of Killzone 2, I suspect the same here.

  • Gran Turismo 5

This will be the most unique of the 3D games on the Playstation 3.

  • Move

This appears to be a combination of  the Wiimote and Kinect personal motion detection. I would like to see a Mount & Blade like game based on these new user interfaces.

  • Kevin Butler

This guy sounds like a caricature of the office bro. This is a lame attempt by Sony to get in touch with the 18-30 age group with canned nerd trends and macho humor.

  • PSP

With the PSP, there seems to have more artistic diversity than the PS3 with games like Persona,  and Valkyria II, and the Metal Gear games on the PSP.

  • Gabe Newell and Portal 2

The voice of GLaDOS ushered in Gabe Newell of Valve Software. It’s fascinating to see a developer that was once critical of the console market coming on stage for Sony and the Playstation3. His appearance was followed by a trailer for Portal 2 and the promise that Steam will appear on the Playstation network.

  • Twisted Metal

Now, this was an exciting end to the conference. A trailer appeared for the PS3 reboot of the acclaimed series. An ice cream truck with the series mascot Sweet Tooth appeared on stage along with the developers. I suspect it was Gabe Newell’ massive frame in that truck. The presentation included demonstrations of the game.
