Near 9:00 pm last night I was waiting for 10:00 for the Daily Show’s coverage of the election. My mom was watching MSNBC when I heard ballpark stats on voter turnout. Apparently there were not as many youth voters as expected. Scarborough said something along the lines of “The youth will turn their back on you”.
Angered by this, I contemplated why I voted. Beforehand, I was trying to sink it in and affirm to myself that I proudly voted Libertarian (that’s a whole other story). Now the reasons why I voted in the first place.
One of the reasons I was one of the youth that voted was precisely because I don’t watch MTV. Throughout the past month. MTV’s many tactics became apparent through my research. There was VG Unity, a music video of videogame characters urging us to vote. That would have disgusted me to see Gordon Freemen, the silent protagonist of my favorite Half Life, open his mouth to tell me to vote. I would never be able to touch my computer again if this happened.
I decided to watch the music video, since I voted earlier yesterday, and the idiocy of it all wouldn’t matter since I already made my decision. Fortunately Freeman has a spine.
Then there was Vote or Die. If there is anything I hate more than my beloved video game characters turning voting into a fad that many will only follow this election. It’s celebrities that suppose people care what they think (shame on those that do care what celebrities think. They need to form their own opinions)
I’m only hoping that Scarborough was lying and that people my age did go out to vote. Not because their idols told them to, but their conscience compelled them.
