I was excitied that Civilization V decidied to appear at this year’s E3 conference.

The Civilization series consists of turn-based strategy games. You play the role of a leader of a civilization alongside other civilizations beginning in the year 3000 BCE. Your main goal is to grow economically and progress technologically. Seeing your domain progress through time and interact with the environment and your rivals is an experience that will stay with you for a while. This game is apparently an ongoing influence on the work of the author Iain Banks, most recently in the parallel-reality story Transition.

Options for victory include territory dominance, military dominance, cultural dominance, diplomatic victory and completion of an extrasolar space program by 2100 AD.

This series of games was a large influence on subsequent games, including Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, Sins of a Solar Empire, and more.

My experience with the series was mostly through Civilization IV.The last expansion for IV, Beyond the Sword, included a number of mods that extend the experience, such as the space themed Final Frontier, the historically-inclined Rhye’s and Fall of Civilization, and downloadable mods Planetfall — based on acclaimed science fiction game from the same producers Alpha Centauri— and Dune Wars, based on my favorite Dune series. I even purchased the previous game, Civilizaton III, in order that I could play Civilization on my netbook.

The latest iteration features a map change from square tiles to hexagons, more in line with traditional military simulation games, which makes cities appear more organic and adds tactical element to troop movements. Removing the ability of units to stack up in one position offers more tactical challenge than the past.
